L’Eroica translates as ‘the heroes’ and started in Tuscany in 1997. UK version  has been held in the Peak District for the past 5 years.
The ride is for pre 1987 bikes of all vintages with 3 distances to choose from 30, 60 and 100 miles. It's an all weekend event with music, stalls  and guest speakers including Victoria Pendleton and the Manager and Lead Ride for the reformed Holdsworth/Campagnolo team.
I decided to take in the 60 mile challenge and started to restore the Falcon which had been lying in my garage unridden since 1994. (A1982 Falcon Majorca which I purchased with the money I earned working at Sainsbury's Thursday evenings and Saturdays whilst studying for my A levels). It came apart with no effort and is a testament to the quality and engineering of componentry of the 1980's and with a clean up and replacement of consumables was soon back on the road. To complete the look I purchased an itchy and thick wool cycling jumper from the 80's off ebay.
The routes itself is a 50/50 mixture of gravel trails, Tissington, Monsal Head etc and roads and is the only sportive I've been on where there is free beer at the cafe stop! I completed the 60 mile ride is a leisurely 4 hours 50 minutes and enjoyed every minute.
The event is very well organised and I can recommend it to anyone who wants to spend a weekend admiring superbly restored bikes and in the company of like minded people.
